Suburban police departments are investigating complaints of door-to-door scams involving teenagers selling magazine subscriptions to benefit area charities, said Erik Anderson, executive director. The Boys & Girls Club of Elgin was named as one of those organizations.
Last week, a Northbrook resident was solicited by a man claiming he had just moved into the neighborhood and was selling magazine subscriptions to raise money for his baseball team to pay for a tournament trip to Hawaii. The man assured the resident that a portion of the proceeds would be donated to the Boys & Girls Club of Elgin. The unidentified man presented a receipt with the club's address and telephone number along with the name of a company, Ultimate Power Sales, in Georgia.
Anderson said the club is urging everyone who is approached as part of this magazine scam to decline making a purchase and contact police. Those who already have purchased magazines are encouraged to stop payment on their check as well as file a police report, he said.
