I have run into a serious problem. I have several clients who furious with me because I had been told that Mary Kay Cosmetics were vegetarian products by my previous director.
I spoke to headquarters who verified that yes cow brains and spinal fluid are definitely used to make the cosmetics, and they are working toward removing them from the products.
It would be nice to say it is fine, but being my several of my clients are Hindu, Seven Day Adventist, and other religions where this is a violation and has left me open for serious repercussions.
The FDA and the US government have been “cracking” down on companies that mislead consumers by not informing them that there are animal remains in their products. (Example McDonalds
has to pay all vegetarians involved in a class actions suit for not informing them their fries contained beef tallow)
My second concern was the FDA release on last Friday. I will copy it at the bottom of this letter.
I have the need to protect myself and my family financially and morally, we are also vegetarian for religious reasons and this has caused a quandary with me who has also been using the products.
I have several thousand dollars worth of merchandise that I can’t use, and many clients who are returning merchandise for a refund.
I know there is no way out of this financially for me, and I would hope that other consultants can avoid the disaster that has occurred by being very; direct with their customers about what is in the products.
For me, I don't think any amount of money, cars or glory is worth sacrificing your relationship with God or your community and I don’t think he intended us to abuse his creatures for vanity.
Are we turning a blind eye and a deaf ear,to our sins?
TRULY GOD FIRST
FDA STATEMENT The Food and Drug Administration has told cosmetics makers they can no longer use brain and spinal cord tissue from older cattle in lipstick, hair sprays, and other products, reports The Associated Press. The fact that they were used at all will likely surprise millions of women who use these products daily. And that's not the only surprise: The new FDA regulations still allow use of these animal tissues in cosmetics as long as they come from younger cattle.
The ban on cow brains and spinal cord tissue from cosmetics is aimed at preventing a fatal human variant of mad cow disease, called Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, from reaching people. Also known as bovine spongiform encephalopathy, mad cow disease causes the brains of infected animals to waste away. There is no cure for animals or humans.
"While the risk is small, if there does happen to be an ingredient from a BSE-infected cow, the consequences would be incredibly drastic," Rachel Weintraub, assistant general counsel of the Consumer Federation of America, told AP. She noted, for example, that sprays could contain animal protein that could be inhaled.
The Center for Science in the Public Interest warns consumers that it's virtually impossible to tell from reading the label if cow brains or spinal cord tissue are included in the ingredients. Caroline Smith DeWaal?, head of food safety for CSPI, urged the FDA and cosmetics' manufacturers to publish a list of ingredients that could contain bovine material so consumers will know whether they should throw out older cosmetics that could be harmful.
AP reports that cosmetic manufacturers insist they already require their suppliers to certify that the cattle-derived ingredients sold to them are free of materials that carry BSE.

Just curious what is the ingredient called that is the spinal fluid or cow brains?
On MK intouch you can get a full ingredient list of all products. I did not see spinal fluid or cow brains but it could be called something else.
As far as your situation, I would call MK corporate and explain the situation maybe they can offer some relief or let you return the products that contain these ingredients. If it is just say lipstick you could take it back from your customers and tell them that you were unaware of the fobidden ingredients and offer to exchange or refund. You can then return them to the company for other non offending products. This is the first I have every heard of this so I am really curious as what the response from corporate is and your director.
