I "fell" for [a call from] Magazine Sales, Limited. (Or maybe Magazine Sweepstakes, Ltd. I can't remember.) They offered what sounded like a great deal. I would pay for Time magazine for 1 year, and get subscriptions to any two magazines of my choice for that same year, plus two free ones. The cost was $1.69/week for the Time magazine. I agreed, then renewed Discover and the Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction through MSL. They sent me "Yachting" and "Men's Journal." Woo.

So I get the credit card bill, expecting to see a charge of something like $87.88. Instead I see $65 and some change. The next month, I see another $65. I call them back. They tell me that they broke the $325 or so into 5 equal payments. I freaked. They informed me that I had agreed to four years of Time. I insisted that I had not--it had been one year, and that was it.

They refused to give me any kind of satisfaction, although after I threatened them with a lawsuit they did reduce it to just two years and I ended up only paying half the $325 or so.

What I should have done was not pick up the phone in the first place. Since I did, what I should have done was to hang up after hearing it was a salesperson. Since I didn't, what I should have done was get them to send me the deal in writing and let me read it. Since I didn't, what I should have done was to demand concrete proof (a tape recording, for instance) that I had said what they said I said. But no. I was an idiot.
