Men Arraigned On Charges Of Raping Concord Woman

Police Say Men Said They Were Salesmen To Gain Entry

CONCORD, N.H. -- Three men answered charges on Thursday that they raped a woman who let them into her house after they told her they were selling magazines.

Cassidy Coburn, Christopher Armstrong and Joseph Haniffy were working as door-to-door salesmen selling magazines for a Florida-based company. In an affidavit, the alleged victim said that after they made their sales pitch, they asked for a drink and she allowed them inside.

The woman told police that she shared a beer with the men, and police believe the beer might have been spiked.

"She still couldn't see straight," the affidavit says. "She could hardly stand up because she felt so bad."

The woman told police that the men "guided her down the hall by putting their hands on her back, pulled her into her bedroom, shut all the lights off, shut the door, and raped her," according to the affidavit.

Coburn gave his own account of events to police.

"She didn't want to do something with all of us," he said in the affidavit. "She didn't. I know she didn't. I know for a fact she didn't."

In court, Hannify's bail was set higher than the two others. Prosecutors said he was the ringleader.

None of the men is from New Hampshire. All have criminal records, and at least two were wanted in other states.

City prosecutor Scott Murray said that the case should serve as a warning to residents.

"The bottom line is if you live in New Hampshire, you're not necessarily secure by virtue of where you live," Murray said. "You have to be very careful as to who you let in your house."

The owner of the Florida magazine company said that the three men are independent contractors hired by a distributor, and it is unclear whether that distributor conducted a criminal background check on the men.
