There was a combination of reasons that motivated Mark Magnani to open his UCC TotalHome® franchise in Chicago, Illinois.

Magnani liked the business concept and liked the product it had to offer. He also liked having the opportunity to control his future.

“You can be as successful as you want to be. You call the shots,” he said. “I’d also like to believe that there’s a certain amount of input that we have in terms of the direction of the organization.”

Magnani was introduced to UCC TotalHome membership through a postcard he received in the mail. He became a member in 1987 when he was 22 years old. Later, when he was working as a sales representative for Pfizer pharmaceutical company and towards his MBA, he decided his career goal was to own his own business. So, Magnani looked into what it took to own a UCC TotalHome franchise, attended a seminar for future franchisees and made his decision.

According to Magnani, once he started his Chicago franchise in 1996, he began to appreciate what hard work really meant.

“Managing all the aspects of a business can be difficult. I never realized how easy I had it before,” says Magnani.

But Magnani wouldn’t want it any other way. The rewards that result from his hard work make it all worthwhile for him. Not only has he earned a Mercedes-Benz from the company, he has also qualified for several Franchise Owner PaceSetters Getaways in Puerto Vallarta, Cabo San Lucas, and Bermuda. In addition, he and his team have won several sales and service awards for his center’s membership productivity.

“Along with the substantial earning potential, UCC TotalHome Franchise Owners are rewarded by helping others develop and grow in their careers. It’s especially gratifying knowing that we’re helping people save money, particularly when they make it clear to the staff that they saved money on an order,” Magnani says.

What does it take to run a successful UCC TotalHome franchise? “Dedication and a willingness to work,” Magnani says.

“There’s more to this business than appears on the surface. There are a lot of angles to it. It’s not that hard; it’s just not what a lot of people are expecting when they look at it,” he said. “It’s a terrific opportunity. It’s a wonderful avenue to explore what your capabilities are, and to improve on those things that you really haven’t addressed before. Owning a franchise, you’ll find out what your weaknesses are and have an opportunity to address them.”

“The backing I’ve received from the Corporate Support Center is also a selling point for franchising with UCC

TotalHome,” he said. “They’ve always been there when I’ve asked for assistance, whether it be through sending somebody up here to help me, answering questions or giving me their resources to find the right path to take. The annual conferences are also a prime motivation for my staff.”

Magnani advises those thinking about starting their own UCC TotalHome franchise to conduct a thorough investigation of the business. “Make sure it’s something you really want to do,” he says. “Don’t do it just for the money.”

“Talk to Franchise Owners who have been successful and who have struggled. They can provide a great perspective on what this business is all about,” he said. “Be prepared to dedicate a lot of your time to the business. It takes a lot of work, but the payoff is worth it. Knowing that you have 100 percent control of your own destiny is certainly very appealing.”
