Lorraine and Randy Cover were on the verge of buying a car dealership in New York state when they decided to go into business as a UCC TotalHome?® franchise.
"Something told us not to buy the dealership," Lorraine says. "We took a trip to Jacksonville, and the day after we got back Direction magazine was in the mail. I threw it on the couch, and it landed open to a page that said a franchise opportunity was available in Jacksonville."
At the time, Lorraine was running a billing and collection service out of their home while Randy worked as a CPA. They liked owning their own business, and were looking for a way to take it to the next level financially, Randy says.
"We also wanted the rewards of dealing with people on a positive level, rather than through a collection agency," he says. The Covers, who joined UCC TotalHome?® of Suffolk County, NY, in February 1993 after being referred by friends, moved to Jacksonville and opened their own franchise in February 1997.
Owning a UCC TotalHome?® franchise has been all they imagined and more, Lorraine says.
"We started to realize a lot of our dreams already -- the cars, the house, the trips. I own a part of something that's very successful and very first-class," she says. "UCC is the ticket to make all your dreams come true."
Since they opened UCC Jacksonville, the Covers say they have expanded their people skills, broken out of their comfort zones and have been able to make more time for their family. Their franchise required a lot of hard work and time when they first opened, Lorraine says. But having the flexibility to bring their toddler to work with them or take time off to attend a school play made working easier.
The Corporate Support Center also eased the start of their new business by supporting them every step of the way, Randy says.
"You just feel that there's somebody else there walking along side of you. They want you to be as successful as you can. They're always pulling for you," Randy says.
The corporation gives franchisees the opportunity to go as far as they want to go with their businesses, he says. The incentives for success from the corporation also do a lot to spur owners and their employees on. Franchisees can qualify for annual getaways with other owners, based on new membership numbers. Employees can also qualify for trips based on the number of memberships they facilitate.
"The trip we took to Cabo San Lucas with UCC was the best trip I ever went on. Corporate does everything first-class," Randy says.
"It certainly generates a lot of excitement," Lorraine adds. "It helps keep our employees focused, that there's something bigger out there and you're a part of it."
Before taking the step to buy a franchise, the Covers suggest working at one for a while to get an idea of what the business is like. Make sure you like the business, they say, because it becomes a big part of your life. A large portion of the work involves interacting with people and customers, so you should enjoy dealing with people.
And, probably most important, you should have faith in the product you are selling, Randy says.
"This is something that we believe in. You don't feel like you're pushing something on somebody that they don't really need," he says. "We can help them out a lot, and it's rewarding to see the reaction of people when they pick up stuff Belief is important. We wholeheartedly believe it works. With this company, if you set your mind to it, you can do just about anything you want." Randy says.
