Desire, determination and dreams: these three Ds accurately describe Rick and Laura Cottrell, owners of the UCC TotalHome? Center in St. Louis West, Missouri. The Cottrells have been franchise owners for only a short time, and already they have their goals set high. "I won't feel successful until I reach the goals I have set for myself," says Rick, a former owner of a technology company. Believe it or not, the Cottrells bought a UCC TotalHome? franchise to downsize their lives! "In my previous company, I had about 200 employees. We also wanted to move closer to Laura's family."

Rick left his position and Laura left her job in web design and they opened up a franchise in 2000. Along the way they have encountered some bumps in the road, but determination to overcome those problems and assistance from the Corporate Support Center have helped them work through any challenges they might face. "The toughest challenge is hiring and recruiting," says Rick. Laura adds, "Another challenge is trying to provide really good service, but corporate is constantly enhancing that area. They are always willing to listen to suggestions and change for the better."

The Cottrells have enjoyed many rewards since becoming UCC TotalHome? franchisees. "We have more freedom in planning how we spend our time," say the couple. "Of course there are the financial rewards, and helping people save money while getting everything they need and want."

Another area where the Cottrells have their sights set high is in the incentive programs offered by corporate. "We plan on having the Mercedes in the next three to four months, and we're excited to qualify for the Pacesetters Getaway soon," says Laura. "The incentives really motivate our staff."

With the determination and drive that the Cottrells possess, there is no doubt that they are well on their way to being successful franchise owners. They recommend UCC to other people considering owning their own business. "UCC is a great concept. You can grow as a person, help families improve their quality of living, take control of how your time is spent, and make money, all at the same time."
