In 1991, while the men were running their wholesale business, Benedict became a UCC TotalHome?® member.
"Scott was sold on UCC. He was constantly telling me about the things he would buy, name-brand items and the savings he would get." Benedict's enthusiasm turned Raymond on to the idea of owning a franchise about five years later when the men started looking for different business opportunities.
They contacted the UCC TotalHome?® Corporate Support Center in Merrillville, IN, and some franchise owners to investigate their potential investment. About a year after their inquiry began, the men opened UCC Tri-Cities, Mich., in August 1997.
Through UCC, both Benedict and Raymond say they have been able to change their lifestyles - they make their own schedules and have met some financial goals that they probably would not have reached had they not opened their franchise. Running a UCC franchise has allowed for more flexibility in their personal lives, Raymond says, and has given them the opportunities to do things they have always wanted to do.
Not only are their own households financially solid, but they are enjoying the rewards that come from helping other people achieve the lifestyles they desire. Through UCC TotalHome?, Benedict says, families are able to afford higher quality or more merchandise than they would buy through a retail store. And it's rewarding to be able to extend that incredible offer that to customers.
"It's unique to be able to help individuals live a better lifestyle, to help them buy better merchandise at lower prices," Benedict says. "As a business it's very unique. There's no competition."
ft doesn't take a degree in business or sales experience two be successful, Benedict and Raymond say. It does, however, take determination and a strong work ethic.
"Understand that it's going to be a roller coaster ride until you can hire staff to offset that," Raymond says. "It's a character issue and a responsibility issue. I think anybody can determine his or her success with UCC."
The ability to talk to and motivate people is important for success with UCC, the men say. Also a key is the understanding that the UCC product sells itself, Raymond says. Once they understood that the best sales technique at UCC TotalHome?® is to let the product speak for itself, the men started to see success in their numbers.
The company equips franchise owners with all the tools they need to run the franchise, including a Business Management School that teaches franchise owners UCC TotalHome?'s time-tested "game plan." Once owners open their franchise, they receive ongoing support from Field Service Representatives, who are available whenever they're needed.
Owners also receive the benefit of the corporation's incentive programs for both owners and their employees. Depending on their levels of sales, owners can qualify for a Mercedes or Cadillac as well as trips to exotic locations -- both of which Benedict and Raymond have earned. Employees may also earn vacation getaways, based on their productivity.
Ultimately, the key ingredients for a successful UCC franchise are resiliency and determination, the men say.
"Don't give in because there are ups and downs," Raymond says. "It's sticking to your game plan, deciding right now how you're going to handle mistakes. It's definitely goal-oriented."
