This complaint was filed by a consumer against DirectBuy of Akron-Canton on 1/17/2007.
description of complaint:
On Saturday, December 23, 2006, we attended a sales promotion for DirectBuy, a company that enables one to buy direct from suppliers. We were contacted originally by telephone and were somewhat induced to attend such promotion by the promise of possibly winning a prize of $50,000 or a home makeover in that amount, computers, vacations, and other expensive gifts for just listening to them. We actually received a very nice kitchen knife and a two-day, three-night stay at a vacation location for the "refundable fee" of $30.
The promotion was very enticing and I was told that this was the ONLY opportunity we would have to participate in this opportunity. If we did not accept right then and there, that we would be unable to take advantage of this offer in the future. Just a week later, we saw commercials on television which gave a 1-800 number for one to call. I very deeply regret not knowing that at that time. We were both very tired and not thinking clearly, especially forgetting our agreement that we would have a 24-hour "thinking it over period" before a large purchase.
On Tuesday, December 26, we contacted DirectBuy and asked to be released from the contract. They said they would accept $2000 for the release. I think this is extortion. I find it unconscionable that there is not a "cooling off period" as for open facilities and that we were lied to about not being able to obtain a membership at a later date if we did not sign on that day.
We believe that $2000 is an exceptionally high price to pay for a lapse in judgement due to fatigue and the stress of the holiday.
