description of complaint:

I was contacted by DirectBuy and invited to an open house. They informed me that the closest location would be Uniontown (Akron). I wanted to attend with my sister, who was also interested, but they informed me that since she lived in Brunswick, Ohio, she would need to attend the location nearest to her. I said fine and drove 60 minutes to Uniontown the following Saturday.

I found the savings potential attractive, since I was in the process of building a new home. The sales approach, however, was very intimidating and extremely high-pressured. I was told that if I did not pay to become a member that very instant, I would not have a second chance and would not be invited back. They also made sure that I initialed the "no refund" clause in the contract.

After returning home, I realized that most of the merchanidse in their catalog (I was looking at it for the first time, and only after I signed the credit card statement) was not the kind of product I would be able to afford, or even need.

I contacted my sister later that evening to see if she was invited to an open house at her location. She said she had an appointment later that week at Alpha Park in Mayfield Village.

The major reason for this complaint is that the company flat-out lied to both my sister and me. The actual nearest location to her is the West Cleveland location. The Alpha Park location is 50 minutes east of her. The nearest location for me is Alpha Park (15 minutes), not Uniontown in Akron, which is 60 minutes away.

I also noticed that my sister could not get through using the same phone number I was using. I found out that the computerized phone system only accepts calls from certain locations. The sales agent tried to call my sister after talking to me, but she could not get through to my sister's phone.
